Salesforce for Google Apps

Salesforce.com has officially announced the release of Salesforce for Google Apps. Rather than try to explain the details of this release and the functionality it provides, I'll simply give you a link to the relevant content on the official Salesforce.com website and blog.

I'll be enabling the new features and putting them through their paces over the next few days then I'll report back with any useful findings.

Salesforce.com Winter 08 Pre-Release

I'm not sure whether it's official or not but Salesforce.com is now offering 60-day trial subscriptions to the pre-release version of their Winter 08 release.

Got all that?

Basically, the next release of Salesforce.com is scheduled to roll-out in early November. If you're itching to get a sneak peak at the new functionality (as I am) you can get a 60-day trial subscription. Sure it will expire and you can't keep your data. But hey, you can play to your heart's content. If you wish to sign-up, click the link below.

Google Docs - Presentation: A Review

Google Docs, the web-based office suite provided by my favorite internet empire just got a little better. Earlier this week, they released their latest addition - Presentation - which many people felt was the one missing feature that kept Google Docs from competing with other web-based suites such as Zoho and the desktop favorite, Microsoft Office.

For those of you who refuse to form complete sentences because bulleted lists are so much more efficient and can't stand up in front of a group to present without glancing over your shoulder at a projected image of your words...fear not! You'll no longer need to wonder whether that dusty old PC in the corner has the latest version of PowerPoint installed. Just fire up a browser and point it at your Google Presentation.

I've put the new application through its paces and written a brief review. However, rather than post those findings here in boring, plain text, I decided to let the application speak for itself. Click the link below to view my first Google Presentation.

Roll-up Summary Fields in Salesforce.com: Revisited

As I mentioned in a previous post, Salesforce.com recently promoted one of my ideas on the IdeaExchange - Roll-Up Summary Fields for Standard Objects. While I'm happy to see that they truly listen to user feedback and have chosen to incorporate one of my ideas in their Winter 08 release, it's worth pointing out that it's only a partial victory. The additional functionality they intend to release only accommodates a fraction of the standard objects and relationships available in Salesforce.com.

Clearly, the level of effort and complexity associated with fully satisfying this feature request must be significant. I completely understand their decision to take a half-step toward the finish line. But that won't stop me from driving the point home (call me Captain Persistence). So, what does a persistent Salesforce.com evangelist do? You guessed it: I've posted a new idea on the IdeaExchange. What's this one called? Wait for it...

Roll-up Summary Fields for (more) Standard Objects and Relationships

If you're at all interested in participating in the process of agile, user centered design then I respectfully request that you review my idea and, if you're so inclined, promote it. Who knows? Perhaps the Spring 08 release will be the full realization of this feature.

Salesforce.com to announce Visualforce next week at Dreamforce

Apparently, Salesforce.com plans to unveil the newest offering on their Force.com platform next week at their annual user conference, Dreamforce.

What will this new offering be called?
Visualforce

What will this new offering do?
Essentially, this should allow Salesforce.com customers to create custom user interface screens and functionality that will be hosted on the Salesforce.com platform. Companies like mine can break free of the limitations of the native screen functionality and build more rich user interfaces without having to host code on our own web servers.

  • ZDNet's Larry Dignan has more details and some early screenshots in this post.
  • CNet has a few things to say about it here.
  • Heck, even the Wall Street Journal wrote a piece about it. (Requires WSJ subscription)
I'll hold judgement until I get my hands on a Developer org and can play with the new functionality but I have to admit, I'm pretty excited.
